Thomas E Flatman entered the Melbourne music scene as a young songwriter fronting the band Durbeyfield, in which he supported the likes of Claire Bowditch, Pete Murray and Missy Higgins and cut his teeth on a range of Victorian and interstate festivals. Since then, his solo music has been more influenced by artists like Rufus Wainright and Sufjan Stevens. His lyrics and heartfelt melodies don’t shy away from the overtly emotional, and his arrangements are often richly layered.
As well as being a musician, Thomas has worked as a mental health support worker in psychosocial recovery centres, as a high school teacher in Frankston and the Western suburbs and knows what it is like being a father and husband trying to pay a mortgage. His lyrics draw on experiences, storytelling and characters from these facets of his life and make for a unique songwriting perspective.
A multi-instrumentalist, Thomas produces his music from his home studio. As an experienced film maker and animator, Thomas' music videos make for an engaging and often uniquely artistic representation of his songwriting on screen. Thomas has received air play and performed live to air on independent radio and has had clips screened on ABC’s rage.
“Flatman’s voice and songwriting skills-are mighty talents. He has the room hushed from the moment he begins-A real discovery” INPRESS magazine.
